Average paddy yields in Lanka higher than in most countries

The average paddy yields in Sri Lanka were higher than in most countries in Asia except Japan and Indonesia, said Dr Nimal H.E. Sandaratne. “However the costs of products in Sri Lanka were much higher than in the large rice producing countries Like Burma, Thailand and Vietnam,” he said.
“Most significantly, average rice yields in the country are about a third of the potential yields, Dr. Sandaratne said. “Self-sufficiency in food, especially rice is deemed Synonymous with food security. In fact national food security could be achieved by a greater diversification of the economy into industries and services than by attempting to be self-sufficient.”
