Comment: “The brotherhood of man” denotes all people but may not sound like it to our modern ears. I am aware of the problem with our language, i.e., “We are all sons of God the Father.” Certainly, by now, we all realize God is not a male or female entity. Nonetheless, it does needs to be said: God is Goodness and all Gods are one God.

Observation: The universe will accommodate your version of reality – to the extent that it can.

Suggestion: While being accommodating, be encouraging, supportive, and tolerant as well. If the person you are accommodating refuses to grow or is, in your opinion, growing too slowly, you may get frustrated. But as long as the person is moving, even a little, be patient and helpful.

Comparison to your expected rate of progress is inevitable, yet it may be best to disregard that judgment in favor of assessing their development in relation to their own methods and measurements.

Brian Schulz recently completed his forest house in the Oregon Woods. He built the home himself, and the design and concept of it were inspired by the traditional Japanese Minka homes, which are built using local materials and steeply sloped roofs to create affordable, open structures. For his house, Schulz used salvaged materials, along with those sourced from within 10 miles of his new home.

The finished tiny house is a 14-by-16-foot home, which coexists perfectly with its woodland surroundings. It cost only $11,000 to build, which was mostly spent on concrete, shakes and insulation. Schulz, who teaches traditional wood kayak building for a living, completed the house in about a year and a half, working in his spare time.

Schulz salvaged a lot of the wood he used to build the house from the bay while kayaking, which he then milled on-site by himself. For the corner posts he repurposed blowdown trees from a friend’s forest. Inside the house, the kitchen counters were milled from a fallen tree he’d collected and kept for 8 years, while the stair railing is made from alder poles that were cut from beside the house.

There are three tables in the house, which were all cut from cedar found on the beach and made in 2 hours. The flooring was made from low-grade reject fir, and using various bits of scrap wood for the trimmings.

One can be Genteel and yet arrogant. One can have Conviction and yet be bull-headed. The trick is to modify each quality with balancing qualities that either eliminate the possibilities of the negative or at least smooth the rough edges. Definition: (1) a strong persuasion or ardent belief; (2) a state of being free from doubt
Comment: Truth and Conviction
The sincere conviction that something is true will allow the individual who holds that conviction to resonate with a power that presents an argument for truth. Yet that person could be wrong. As a matter of fact, the only thing that may be right is the sincerity of the conviction. Therefore the individual will do whatever he or she can to make the belief resonate with truth.
For example, a vessel much larger than described would be needed for Noah to carry two of every species on the planet; but those who believe this “fact” sincerely, do whatever they can to make it true. They try to make it consistent with logic. If it could be proved or disproved by some objective means, then they could rejoice in their accurate belief or would have to readjust their conviction.
Actual facts as well as facts of belief have the resonance of truth when spoken with conviction. The listener must decide what is objective truth or subjectively true.

Comment: Rising out of one’s own past often leaves a person with the feeling that what did happen was destined to happen, after all it all happened so naturally. But you can also imagine many very different outcomes if you had made differing choices. You truly are the creator of your own subjective reality. The next trick is to see how you and your choices can be connected to objective reality. Which person will emerge?

“They prefer a life caged in their precepts, in their compromises, in their revolutionary plans or in their [disembodied] spirituality.”
So said Pope Francis in his remarks following the readings last Friday, he focused on the day’s Gospel, drawn from that according to St Matthew (11:16-19). There, Jesus compares the generation of his time to always unhappy children, explaining that they were, “not open to the Word of God.” Their refusal, he explained, was not of the message, but of the messenger. “They reject John the Baptist,” he said, who came, “neither eating nor drinking ,” saying of him that he was “a man possessed.” They reject Jesus because they say, “He is a glutton, a drunkard, a friend of publicans and sinners.” They always have a reason to criticize the preacher:
“The people of that time preferred to take refuge in a more elaborate religion: in the moral precepts, such as the group of Pharisees; in political compromise, as the Sadducees; in social revolution, as the zealots; in gnostic spirituality, such as Essenes. They were [happy] with their clean, well-polished system. The preacher, however, was not [so pleased]. Jesus reminded them: ‘Your fathers did the same with the prophets.’ The people of God have a certain allergy to the preachers of the Word: they persecuted the prophets, [even] killed them.”
Then the Pontiff turned his attention to the Chritians of our day saying: “Seeing these children who are afraid to dance, to cry, [who are] afraid of everything, who ask for certainty in all things, I think of these sad Christians, who always criticize the preachers of the Truth, because they are afraid to open the door to the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for them, and pray also for ourselves, that we do not become sad Christians, cutting off the freedom of the Holy Spirit to come to us through the scandal of preaching.”
