Jordan AMMAN — The Ministry of Agriculture in association with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is working to finalise a package of programmes to increase the Kingdom’s food productivity and consequently enhance its food security, a ministry official said. “Our programmes, which are to be discussed in detail early next month during a one-day workshop, will tackle projects the ministry, other public and private departments, and the FAO can implement to enhance food security here,” head of the ministry’s Plant Production Department, Adnan Abdel Nour said.
The programmes’ major element is to help farmers increase their production of fruit and vegetables, which will increase their income. “Currently, FAO officials are here to help us achieve such goals in the future,” he said, adding that funding for these programmes will come from local and international financial assistance.
Part of the programme is to increase the focus on growing crops of strategic importance to the country and its people, such as wheat, barley and grains. Introducing modern technology in farming and cultivation is another part. The programmes, said Abdel Nour, will give the private sector a bigger role so they can benefit from investing more in the agricultural sector.
